Anxiety and Panic

Anxiety can take many forms such as social anxiety, generalized anxiety, phobias and fears, obsessions, compulsions, OCD symptoms, panic attacks, performance anxiety, excessive worrying, hypochondria.

One of the things that makes anxiety so disturbing is that it often leads to feelings of helplessness and loss of control. The experience can be quite confusing as well since we may not even understand the source of our anxiety, much less what to do to make it go away.

While there are practical ways to better manage specific anxieties – and these certainly can be explored in therapy through the incorporation of cognitive behavioural (CBT) and mindfulness techniques – perhaps the best way in the long run to reduce the strength of anxious feelings is simply to speak about what makes us anxious and to explore the meaning in those anxieties.

One of the benefits of getting a better handle on anxiety is that doing so can free up a lot of energy which can be directed towards other areas of life (career, family, social, etc.) and lead to greater life satisfaction.

I hope that if you decide to work with me you will feel able to discuss your anxieties – if not right away, then eventually. You can be sure that I will be very sensitive to this aspect of our work and that I would respect your courage for sharing your anxieties and would not judge you.
